Diocese of Borongan has a New Bishop

BishopAfter more than half a year of being without a bishop, Pope Benedict XVI has appointed Fr. Crispin Barrete-Varquez as the new Bishop of Borongan. He replaces Leonardo Medroso who was reassigned to the Diocese of Tagbilaran in Bohol late last year.

The announcement was made by the Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines on Saturday night, August 4.

No date has been announced yet for his consecration as bishop nor his installation in Borongan.

Here are some basic facts about the province’s new bishop:

- he is 46 years old and was born in Sevilla, Bohol
- studied Philosophy at the Immaculate Heart Seminary in Tagbilaran City and took up Theology at the St. Augustine Major Seminary in Tagaytay City
- was ordained a priest at age 28 and took up post graduate studies in Cebu City as well as at the Ateneo de Manila University
- served a total of 9 years as a seminary formator, 4 at the Sacred Heart Seminary in Tagbilaran and 5 at the St. Augustine Major Seminary in Tagaytay City
- became a Vicar Forane of the St. Joseph Vicariate
- served as the Vicar General of the Diocese of Tagbilaran before becoming the Bishop of Borongan
