Balangiga, Eastern Samar Awaits Return of Church Bells

By • Sep 22nd, 2008 • Category: News

The town of Balangiga, Eastern Samar has yet to retrieve their church bells taken by American soldiers during the Philippine-American war more than a century ago.

To this day, they have yet to receive updates on the Philippine government’s effort to retrieve the bells, said Balangiga Mayor Viscuso S. de Lira in an interview with Businessworld.

The church bells were taken as trophies by the American Armed Forces in retaliation for the attack of their comrades during the Balangiga Encounter Day in September 28, 1901.

There were three bells taken as war trophies. One is currently at the Camp Red Cloud in South Korea and the two others are at the F. E. Warren air base in Cheyenne, Wyoming in the United States.

  1. Too bad I was placed in Indiana and not in Wyoming during my exchange year. One of my goals in the US was to visit the bells and bring the bells issue to the State Department, the facilitator of our program. Also, I was planning to hand a letter to Sen. Richard Lugar about the matter when I was invited to speak in his leadership symposium but I was discouraged. Anyway, I will try to write him now that I’m back at home.
