By Ced Solidon • Sep 18th, 2008 • Category: NewsRepresentatives of the Eastern Samar’s Provincial Mining Regulatory Board (PMRB) will visit Homonhon Island in Guiuan this week to verify reports of illegal mining operations there.
In the past, a mining company called Heritage Resources and Mining Corp. (HRMC) conducted mining operations in the chromite-rich island for 25 years. Its contract, however, expired March this year.
Eastern Samar Governor Ben Evardone said in an interview that if HRMC wishes to continue its operation, it would have to renew its permit. The same goes with other mining companies who wish to conduct mining operations there, the governor added.

the new mining company in Homonhon is owned by a Chinese Steel Corpotation known as Peng Cheng. This is actually a product of the Early Harvest Program – a treaty between the Phil. gov’t and the People’s Republic of China in which the latter will bring in investments and loans to our country. In exchange, our gov’t will allow the Chinese to utilize (extract minerals) up to 2 million hectars of our public lands, plus our seas, for 25 years. Eastern Samar is one of this treaty’s priority areas. In Homonhon, Peng Cheng, as well as the other chinese mining companies there that uses dummies, has been claiming lands, including farms of poor farmeers. Homonhon mining is not an isolated case, as we can see. The ZTE Broadband deal is actually one of its siblings. If you’re from Eastern Samar and you notice some Chinese sight-seeing with your local government officials, be afraid. Be very afraid.

Its very true that there is illegal mining in homonhon Island, there”s a lot of mining firms hovering in homonhon island and most of them , if not all, are doing illegal mining activities. There’s certain Boy Pemintel and Boy Joven who are apparently conniving with some barangay officials in the island in order to push their interest of getting lots of cash from the underground deposits of homonhon island at the expense of the whole island and its whole populace. We cannot blame fully the barangay officials for it seems that their whole being is so inferior against the miners and probably, they do not have enough knowledge on their administrative role or their basic human rights.
if it would help I have a video in one of the mining site in Homonhon. we were able to climb the summit of camp #9. you would see the destruction from that camp plang…
post the link here. i could then put it in a post. or you could post it yourself.
