By • Dec 3rd, 2008 • Category: News

The perpetrators of the highway robbery last week in Barangay Campidhan in San Julian, Eastern Samar took away under 20,000 pesos in cash, 5 mobile phones and the life of a college student.

This article by Fr. Cyrain Cabuenas tells the story of the incident that occured around 11 am on Nov. 23. Interviews described the robbers as bold and cruel as they did not bother covering their identities while killing a graduating student of the Eastern Samar State University.

With the mounting incidents of killings and robberies in the province, one of the Philippine National Police’s leaders expressed doubts on the capacity of Senior Superintendent Prudencio dela Cruz to keep the province safe.

Alice Nicart wrote an article on Senior Superintendent Prudencio dela Cruz’ reaction to his superior’s statement.

  1. first, it’s the voluminous craters that deter people of going to eastern samar… second, the heightened crime rate most of which are robbery/hold-up related. the root of it all is the grave destitution of our people… when one is hungry he/she will do whatever it takes to survive. this includes those who are hungry in power and wealth whose greed and callousness have compelled some of our folks to either go up hill or turn into hapless robbers… unless better development alternatives and opportunities are provided, estehanons will remain in abject poverty. however, it’s not the sole responsibility of the government… it’s primarily the responsibility of everyone. afterall, we’re left to fend for ourselves!

  2. so my province has finally become the wild, wild east. thanks, to who, i dunno. but can’t take some images out of my mind: emaciated figures sitting idly on roadsides while gas-guzzling suvs of politicos pass by; farmers cursing the december rain while being entertained with stories on who the rained the most number of bills during the last fiesta;cops betting on get to have the new girl at the karaoke bar, etc. images, images, images, prognoses of what will become of the east.

  3. what’s samar’s rank in the crime rate stuff? no. 1? wow sikat.
